Treasured Family Christmas Eve Traditions Including The German Tradition Of Finding The Pickle.

I love incorporating Christmas traditions into our family. This tradition of finding the Christmas Pickle Ornament on the tree has been a fun tradition since my kids were young and we still incorporate it today.

Many years ago I was given a Christmas Pickle Ornament with a description of a German Tradition. The tradition states that on Christmas Eve, and some say Christmas morning, the pickle ornament is hidden somewhere on the family Christmas tree. The first child to find the pickle on the tree would receive an extra gift. Also, some traditions state that the child would have a year of good fortune.

Since I have German-Austrian roots, I liked the idea of including this tradition in our family. I later came to question whether this is really a German tradition or one that was made up in the United States. It turns out it was possibly a marketing ploy by Woolworth stores in the 1880s to sell more pickle ornaments! However, at this point, I really don't care. We have included this Christmas Eve tradition in our house now for over 19 years, and my kids still enjoy it and want to continue the tradition.

You can buy a Christmas Pickle ornament at many stores like Hallmark, or order online on Amazon or many other sites. It's not too late to buy your Christmas Pickle!

Our Christmas Eve tradition follows that we go to the Christmas Eve Candlelit service at our church in the afternoon or early evening. We then sometimes have a Christmas Eve dinner with family and friends.

At the end of the dinner, we always have a "Happy Birthday Jesus Cake." The type of cake is not important; the point is to remember why we are celebrating Christmas. However, I usually make a Chocolate Storm Cake. For the recipe to my Chocolate Storm Cake, click here.

When we have finished playing some games, I instruct all children (including guest children) to go into the other room, so I can hide the pickle ornament somewhere on the tree. The kids then come into the room to look for the pickle ornament.

Whoever finds the ornament gets a prize. The other kids usually get some trinkets as well. I have recently put some toys and candy in a pretty Christmas ball, see the cover picture and picture below, for the main prize.

Reading The Night Before Christmas on Christmas Eve night is another tradition that we have kept even today. I know it's a little corny, but the kids still ask Carey to read it. I guess it brings back childhood memories for us all. ❤️

Finally, either late that night or on Christmas morning, before we open up presents, we light our last candle on the Advent Wreath after discussing a few scriptures surrounding the Nativity.

Another tradition that we do as a family is to make a Popcorn Cranberry Garland for one of our Christmas trees.

This is a fun all natural craft that is great for the whole family.

This is a difficult time for so many. Our family lost my dear sister-in-law Suzahn on Valentine's Day last year. Our hearts are heavy, but we rejoice in the knowledge that we will see her again someday.

We wish all of you a blessed Christmas. May God grant you peace and hope during this Christmas season... after all, that is what Christmas is all about ❤️.

Much Love,

Penny and Carey
